Bullying, Social Problem.
Almost everyone of us experienced this century old Social problem, Bullying. This is a behavior that can be associated with discrimination in one way or another. It is undeniable that every childhood encounter this unfortunate behavior which may change everyone’s life, if being misguided, both the bully and the bullied. This can happen anytime at school or at work. Bullying is a grievous act that is cause of using power, authority or strength through harassment against weaker fellas who doesn’t have the capability or the will to defend themselves and fight back.
Bullying is defined as the use of strength, power, influence or authority to intimidate and terrify someone and to force the victim to submit to what the bully wants. Most of the time, the goal of the bully is just to shows superiority and dominance against the victim. Bullying happens mostly at school where children are trying to compete against their fellow students and will do everything to prove their worth and to show that they’re in control.
Characteristics of Bullying.
Stopbullying.gov characterized bullying as:
- An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
- Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Most of the time, bullying is just a result of what the bully see or experience. This means that when someone is being bullied at home by their parents, guardians, or anyone at home, a kid will reflect what these experiences through someone at school or in his group that has lesser capability compared to him. This will server as his outlet of what he feels and what he is experiencing. Being bullied will results to being a bully on your own way.
The effect of bullying differs from victim to another victim. Most of results to becoming a bully themselves, just like a domino effect which can be hard to stop. Just like discrimination, this a contemporary social problem which may put the society in danger. There are reports about victims of bullying that are suicidal or even causes few deaths already due to the feeling of being a loser, having no one to talk to or being alone and lose of self-esteem.
Bullying is serious problem that is mostly ignored by the society. To prevent this from happening and from spreading like a virus, one should act right away. “Stop bullying” campaigns are available anywhere as one form of Awareness for everyone.
To stop bullying is every parent’s primary role as behavior building for kids starts at home. Parents should set as good example to their kids as children will always follow what they see and not always what they know. Teachers at school also plays an important role. They can stop this by teaching students the cause and effects of bullying. And everyone can contribute to prevent bullying. Always ask the bully to stop and report right away to the authorities for any incidents of bullying in place.
